MOD :
The MOD-extension is an older type of the options. A characteristic is, that the
simutaneous 'channels' have a fixed global setting qua panorama-position.
At the minimum of 4 channels, the setting of 1-2-3-4 is : L-R-R-L.
And this order is repeated with more channels.
So a MOD of 6 channels will be : L-R-R-L-L-R.
If a sample must have a different position, it is necessary to set the panning-code
with every sample-acvtivation in the pattern.

XM :
The XM-extension was the next step. Enhancement of channels and commands.
Bigger sample-files were possible. The fixed order of L-R-R-L was replaced by
the fact that every imported sample was as default in a 'mono' position, so
in a panning-range of 0 - 256 set on 128.
Any other position needs to be edited, global or local.

In XM-files one no longer works with 'samples' but with 'instruments'.
Meaning, that still there must be a sample-file opened, but it is just raw material.
The sample will be transferred to the 'instruments'-section, where the final
'global settings' will be given to the sample, such as volume, panning, pitch and effects.
There is (in ModPlug) the possibility to edit an 'envelope' over the timelength concerning
volume and stereo-position. A sample thus can be moving from Right to Left every time.
