Notes : This was made as soundtrack for a 8mm movie made by Jon Meijer : "Schooltijd" - 1979 The movie was made for a small basic school that was in a very old shabby building, and was to be shown on the day, the opening of a brand new building was celebrated. The maker was a teacher there, who asked me to make the soundtrack. He wrote a story about two little girls in 'ancient' outfits walking through the wood to school. - the 'Old time' part. Then they discover a huge chrome shiny ball in the ground, which causes a 'time-jump' into the present, with some mysterious effects. - the 'Journey street' part. So they go on, in a modern outfit, leaving the wood and seeing the new school building. After that, the movie shows a tour around different places inside and outside the school. The realisation had its obstacles, because the sound couldn't be added to the 8mm movie. I had to record it on cassette tape, to be played simultaneously with the projector. So the movie had to be ready first, and I had to write a soundscript with a timetable regarding the different shots and scenes, to adjust the duration of my pieces. At the presentation these efforts were of course no guarantee for a synced performance, even after a common start of cassette and projector. The projector had an unstable speed, so at the end the time shift got worse. This was also the first time I discovered the power of sound on the interpretation of the visual. I underestimated the impact it can have, before this. During the presentation there were of course many parents with their other, yet younger children. These kids got really upset and frightened during the scene with the mysterious ball, where I rattle with some percussive sounds, combined with a low synth sound. So I became aware to have caution when adding sound to visuals. Another notice was, that, during 'Old time', everyone in the audience was joyfully stamping on the beat, while in fact the piece is written in 9/8... A 'tala' of 3x2 + 1x3. |
